Walker Lake 2006
This was CJ's first trip with us. CJ is our nephew and he was 14 or 15 at this time. He had an absolute blast with us and on Friday (day after this was taken), he was out on the lake in a float tube with us. We actually had better fishing from the shore in waders (like below) than we did in float tubes, but we don't care. We're together, we're fishing, we're relaxing and we're having fun. As you can see below, CJ is hooked up. I think Travis and I were more excited about him catching fish than he was. He caught the first 2.
There are a few ways to get up to Walker Lake, after a few different routes, I picked the most direct and......I won't say easiest, just the fewest amount of highway changes. We drive up Hwy 395 to Hwy 167, which is just north of Mono Lake. A right turn on Hwy 167 (east, duh) and just follow that into Hawthorne, Nevada. At the state line, it changes to Hwy 359. The most interesting part of the trip is going through the mountain pass about 1/2 way to Hawthorne. The highway is 2 lanes, very curvy and invariably, it snows the night before we head home, so it's a bit treacherous (no guard rails). Of course, as you'll see in the pics, after the snow, the drive is absolutely breath-taking.
