This year, we tried something new. We went to Lee's Ferry, Arizona and fished the 16 mile stretch of the Colorado River between Glen Canyon Dam and Lee's Ferry landing. We left Monday, June 16. Since we both love to drive, the 9 hours didn't bother us. Driving allows us to stop when we want or need to and to take pics along the way. We drove up to Barstow and then took Hwy 40 across to Flagstaff. Almost the exact time we hit the Arizona border, the wind started blowing like crazy. Our stop in Seligman for gas and a couple of pictures shows that. The drive up into Flagstaff is nice, then back down the other side into the desert. Once we got closer to the Colorado River, the scenery changed for the better. Lots of red cliffs and more interesting things to see. The views from Navajo Bridge over the Colorado were pretty spectacular, as was the scenery down on the water. The wind blew hard on Tuesday, making the fishing a bit difficult, but still good. Wednesday, the temp was cooler by 5-7 degrees and there was almost no wind. The fishing was stellar!
Thursday we left Lee's Ferry and drove up into Utah. We left Hwy 89 and took Scenic Highway 12 past the entrance to Bryce Canyon, past the Escalante/Grand Staircase National Park, up over Boulder Mountain and into the valley were Loa, Utah sits.
Friday, we fished with Troy, one of The Quiet Fly Fisher guides. We hit UM Creek again, at the same place we started out last year when we were there. The area had not been fished in 5 days and there were no cattle around to ruin the creek. The fishing was incredible! UM Creek doesn't get much deeper than 2-3 feet and isn't very wide, but it's stuffed full of beautiful cutthroats and rather large tiger trout. Last year, Mike told us there were 20" tigers in the stream, this year, Troy said the same thing. I proved them correct as I landed a 19"-20" tiger trout out of 2 feet of water.
